UGI Basketball Tournament Back in Full Swing

United General Insurance (UGI) Wheelchair basketball tournament enters its second week with Roaring Thunders set to maintain the lead as they face second-placed Zigzaggers on Saturday 11 November 2017 at Kachere Rehabilitation Centre, Blantyre.

The tournament that is being run by Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) was launched on 29th October this year and aims at testing and advancing basketball skills among players.

Roaring Thunders captain, Bartholomew Maida expressed confidence over his team’s potential success for the championship.

“We are well prepared and we have been training for the past two weeks so that we are fit on Saturday. Our eyes are on the silverware. Come Saturday Roaring Thunders goes straight into the finals,” said Maida with confidence.

Speaking with Sports Malawi, Sozobal Wheelchair Basketball Chairperson Charles Nyasa revealed why the matches are deliberately scheduled at two-week intervals.

“The intervals are there to offer teams enough time to train and condition themselves for participation in major matches. As you know, we do not have adequate wheelchair basketball facilities at the moment. However, as an association, we recognize the importance of training sessions in sports. So we put mechanisms in place to ensure that every team has a chance of utilizing the few existing resources for practical sessions which mainly involve stretching, strengthening and aerobic endurance programs”, Said Nyasa, who is also a Physiotherapist by profession.

Since the launch in October, three games have been played where each of the four teams (Black Spiders, Wheel Warriors, Roaring Thunders and Zigzaggers) has played with at least another team.

This Saturday, Zigzaggers will play against Wheel Warriors, Roaring thunders against Zigzaggers and finally, Wheel Warriors against Black Spiders. Sozobal sincerely invites all basketball lovers to come in large numbers to witness the magic of this unique sport.

The games start at 8:00 am and end at 2:00 pm.
