Despite Flames missing on the realm of teams that will take part in this year’s Confederation of East and Central Football Associations (CECAFA) tournament, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) still insists to have received a nod for the country’s flag carrier to participate in the regional football tournament.
Following the drew which took place yesterday, Malawi national football team is missing amongst the twelve teams that have been drawn in three groups.
But speaking to Sports Malawi, FAM’s general Secretary, Sugzo Nyirenda, pointed for no panic as his body has received an assurance to participate as guests.
“We received a nod yesterday and we have been assured that by the end of business today we will receive all the necessary procedures and documents and its then that we will know which group are we in,” he said.
Asked if he think the country’s elite league won’t be affected with the Flames participation in CECAFA, Nyirenda said his body will have a meeting with Super League body and flames coach.
“I don’t think the league will be disturbed as others are putting it. We will follow FIFA rules and I don’t think any team will send more than four players but either way we will call for a meeting with Super League of Malawi and national team coach to map the way forward,” said Nyirenda.
Currently, a 27 member squad has regrouped at Chiwembe Technical Center in Blantyre ahead of the tournament.
Coach Earnest Mtawari has called for the first time Mighty Wanderers striker, Jabulani Linje, midfilder, Nelson Kangunje, Dan Msimuko and defender Boston Kabango.
